When life hands you lemons, make lemonade. How about …When life hands you lemons, make cucumber water.

Sometimes you have to make the best of a situation given the resources you have on hand.
This year my vegetable garden produced more cucumbers than normal, and I didn’t know what to do with the extra cucumbers even after giving them to friends and family, eating cucumbers everyday and evening canning some for this winter.

As I was searching for more cucumber recipes in August, I came across a recipe for cucumber water. I tried it and it is quite delicious. Now I make cucumber water almost everyday and will continue to enjoy them until my garden no longer is producing the vegetable.

The point is to look at your immediate resources and become creative quickly in making the most of any given situation. Here is how I’ve applied this lesson to running my business:
  • Use an unexpected resource to your advantage — Is business slower than last year? If you have extra time on your hands, focus your energies into marketing your business to current clients and prospects. Look at how your business offers solutions.
  • Change happens but growth is optional — Are you used to doing things a certain way and all of a sudden the process in interrupted? Change will occur without your permission or knowledge. It’s how to choose to accept, embrace and work with that change that will set you apart.
  • Seek feedback from different sources — Give yourself the opportunity to solicit feedback from different sources. Instead of asking your sales team how are sales, ask your clients how are their sales and discuss ways that you can help increase their revenue. solutions.

The lesson I’ve learned is to make the most of any given situation. I didn’t expect a bumper crop of cucumbers this summer but to my surprise I’m now a real fan of cucumber water. I made the most of the situation and even though it’s a small change of behavior, it’s to my benefit because now I know each July – September I’ll have cucumber water instead of lemon water.

How are you handling the lemons of life?
